GoNintendo Video - Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Review-in-Progress

Am I really feeling it?

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is right around the corner, and we've got a ton of thoughts to share. Following our preview, we dive much deeper into what this revamp has to offer.

GoNintendo Feature: We chat with Obsidian about The Outer Worlds' journey to Switch

A Halcyonic effort

We're just a a little over a week away from The Outer Worlds making its way to Switch. Obsidian teamed up with Virtuous to make this highly-anticipated port happen, and soon enough we'll all be able to check the game out for ourselves. While we count down the days to launch, let's dive into some discussion with Obsidian about how this all came together.

We had the opportunity to chat with Eric DeMilt, Production Director on The Outer Worlds at Obsidian, where we picked his brain for all sorts of juicy details. Check out our full discussion below!

GN: What made you decide to bring The Outer Worlds to Switch?

DeMilt飞艇群二维码平台: We are always excited to see our games on as many platforms as possible. Being game developers, there is a certain Nintendo/Switch fanbase on the team. The idea of having a Switch port was really exciting for us as fans and devs. I think the actual decision to move things forward came out of conversations between Nintendo and our publishing partners at Private Division.

GN: How long has the port been in the works?

DeMilt飞艇群二维码平台: I think we started working with Virtuous on the early stages of the prototype in February of 2019. Once they got Roseway up and running and playable on Switch dev kits, we began work on the full port.

GN: Does this version of the game include the same content as previously-released versions?

DeMilt: Yes, the Switch version and its Day 1 patch will contain all content and features, including font scaling, that can be found on other platforms.

GN: Will the Switch version include any extra features as compared to the versions already released?

DeMilt: We did take advantage of the Switch’s gyros to add motion input to help with aiming. We also exposed more input sensitivity controls to users in the settings, to help match aiming and movement to individual preferences and added sticky targeting to help with aiming for more casual players.

GN: How do the Switch's unique features enhance the experience?

DeMilt: As I previously mentioned, we added support for gyro input for players who enjoy using the motion of the handheld to assist with aiming. This is a unique add for the Switch, making targeting and combat easier, that is not supported by other platforms.

For me the biggest unique feature of the Switch is the ability to pick it up and take it anywhere and still have the same core game experience that you might have on other platforms.

GN: What was the toughest part of bringing the game over to Switch?

DeMilt: Ports to any secondary platform can be challenging. The biggest challenge was knowing the strengths, weaknesses, and unique differences between Switch hardware and our launch platforms. Rather than learn these lessons the hard way, porting the game internally, we partnered with a team at Virtuous who were familiar with our content and had a lot of experience porting and co-developing high-quality titles on Switch and other platforms.

GN: What areas of the Switch port are you particularly proud of?

DeMilt: To be honest, it is hard for me to point to any one area and say that’s the one. This will probably sound pretty generic, but in all honesty, I am most proud of the fact that a player can have the full, high-quality, experience of The Outer Worlds, but with the portability of the Switch hardware.

GN: Any suggestions for those venturing out into Halcyon for the first time?

DeMilt: I am probably the worst one to answer this question since I am a shoot first, ask questions later type of player… I’m the one Tim and Leonard are always telling stories about having to design around… But, that’s the great thing about The Outer Worlds. It’s an RPG where you have the freedom to play how you want to play. It’s a great setting with interesting NPCs and companions that is fun to explore and play in your own way. You’ll have as much fun exploring the world, delving into NPC and companion stories and motivations, and making your own decisions, as you will shooting your way through your problems.

A huge thanks to Eric and the whole team at Obsidian for chatting with us! The Outer Worlds comes to Switch on June 5th, 2020,

LEGO and Nintendo had 8 ideas before they settled on LEGO Super Mario, abandoned ideas and Nintendo's involvement discussed

The ultimate collab

It took a very long time for Nintendo and LEGO to officially partner up on a project, but we're going to see the results of their efforts on Aug. 1st, 2020 with LEGO Super Mario. In an interview with GamesIndustry, Lego design manager Jonathan Bennink discussed how long ago the process got started, and just how many ideas they had.

"The first talks started in the summer of 2015, when upper management met and had talks about whether we should collaborate. At that level it's mostly about values, what you want to bring to the world, and see if you align in terms of morals. Then about eight ideas were brought to the table -- all concrete directions -- and one of them was this idea of an interactive figure. We had a range of them at the time, not just Mario.

Both Nintendo and Lego management voted on the ideas and the one that got the most votes was the interactive figure, because it was one of the most original things that we saw in the line-up. It was something neither company had done before.

The only brief my design team got was: do something that only these two companies could do together. It's a Lego product, but it's also a Nintendo product. It was never going to be a normal thing. Both companies have so many fans who have been asking for this for a while, and we felt like maybe they can wait a little bit longer but we will give them something new."

Mr. Bennink also discussed one of the ideas that the team toyed with, but eventually moved away from.

"We tried a concept where kids would have to complete levels in the app, and then they'd build it in that way... but it kind-of took all of the fun and the light-heartedness out of the building because kids were only completing levels in the app. We figured they did that enough in video games already. We felt that the fun here is being creative and building. That was something we had to learn the hard way, because we put a lot of effort into the other app where we made these levels. We scrapped everything and started again. But that's what happens. You learn."

As any Nintendo fan knows, Nintendo takes their content very seriously. When it comes to partnering up with other companies, they want to be as involved as possible. This stems from back in the early days of Nintendo, where the Big N felt extremely burned by the results of the Super Mario Bros. movie. Nintendo took a lot of time to get back to a place where they could trust other companies, but now they make sure to work side-by-side with them. Bennink explains just how involved Nintendo was with the LEGO team.

飞艇群二维码平台"Hands-on is putting it very nicely. They are just so passionate about anything they do. They care about what the consumer in the end feels more than anything else. They've been a part of making the play concept from the earliest sketches. Sometimes they would make a prototype, sometimes we would, and we'd ship them back and forth. They really did the essential thinking on what the play could be.

They also helped us with the technology. We developed the sensor technology together, and now they are helping us go to market. It's been a rather unique collaboration for Lego, where we have been so close on everything that we do, including the packaging and the drop tests. In prototype they would drop it 6,000 times."

Virtuous says they have "no doubt" they can handle ports of any current-gen game for Switch, talk about XCOM 2 Collection challenges

Can't wait to see what they tackle next!

With each port of a PS4/XB1 title to Switch, fans wonder just what else is possible. Numerous ports have come along that might not be as visually pleasing as the original, but they impress nonetheless. Amazing work has been done so far by multiple teams, including the gang at Virtuous.

With Virtuous having tackled numerous Switch ports so far, the company has gained all sorts of knowledge in how these projects can work. In an interview with Nintendo Life, Senior Producer Zhang Chengwei said he's confident his team could tackle any project for Switch.

We propose the best solutions for how to fully use the Switch’s best features and really make the game shine, not just as a game, but specifically as a Switch game. Off the back of our work on Starlink: Battle for Atlas, Dark Souls: Remastered, The Outer Worlds and the coming XCOM2, we now have no doubt that Switch adaptations can be worked for games on any of the current generation of consoles (PS4/XB1). We have our own quality standards and obviously we don't create low-quality products which might hurt the Switch library or the wider games industry.

The latest work Virtuous is handling comes with XCOM 2 Collection. Chengwei opened up about what unique struggles this port brought about.

The biggest challenge we find is memory optimisation. The XCOM2 PC game uses more than 7GB memory but on Switch we can utilise just 3.2GB of memory usage. You need to continuously profile the game, make decisions, implement and test, then profile again. I’d say that we spent half a year just to optimise the memory, and we used many methods throughout this period, including using more efficient formats for files, removing needless memory usage, and even modifying and optimising the original console's memory system. This process is like squeezing water from a sponge. As more water is squeezed from the sponge, the harder the process becomes!

The one where we talk about Toucan Sam

飞艇群二维码平台There's so much going on in this show, I don't even know what to say! I guess I'll mention that we have a super special announcement in this episode. I promise, it's really big news. I know I'm excited for it, and I hope you are too! Along with that, it's all the usual trimmings of the GN Podcast. This one really came together!

Hackers discover Switch issue that makes it slightly easier for them to guess your password (UPDATE)

Expect Nintendo to fix this very soon

Here's some scary information about your Switch and online interactions. Hackers have noticed an odd glitch with logging into the Switch eShop that gives them a better shot at figuring out your password.

飞艇群二维码平台According to security researcher Runa Sandvik, it all has to do with the Switch eShop. When you first hop onto the eShop, thhe 'OK' dialogue box is greyed out before you type in a password. If you enter in the correct password, the box lights up and you can log in. The thing is, the 'OK' box also lights up if the user only enters the first eight characters of their password.

This means that the eShop gives some sort of visual feedback to the person attempting to log in. If a hacker is trying to figure out your password and has a string of different combinations to try, they could potentially get feedback that they're on the right path with one of their inputs. The hacker would still have to get the first 8 characters right to cause the glitch, but if they do, the eShop lets them know they're getting close to the full key.

Thanks to Noel for the heads up!

UPDATE - It seems Vice may have jumped the gun on their feature, but we're not 100% certain yet. After some lengthy detecitve work, it seems you can get the 'OK' box to light up by including at least one letter and one number in the text entry field. That goes for completely random letters/numbers as well. You can also get the 'OK' box to light up if you use a capital letter and then random lowercase letters. This evidence would point to the above info not being correct, but again, we're not completely sure. Huge thanks to T27Duck and Kolma for checking this out.

NPD April 2020 - year-to-date dollar sales of Nintendo Switch highest in US hardware history

The NPD results for April 2020 are in, and not surprisingly, the Switch killed it yet again. The thing is, the Switch saw success on a whole new level this time.

According to NPD's Mat Piscatella, Switch was the best-selling hardware platform of April in both unit and dollar sales. Along with that, year-to-date dollar sales of Switch are the highest of any hardware platform in US history. Nintendo has stolen the record from themselves in this case, as the Wii was the previously record-holder for April 2009.

NPD April 2020 - month's best-selling games, Nintendo Switch top 10 charts

A fantastic month for all

The software sales for April 2020 in the U.S. have come in, and there's some heavy-hitters all throughout the charts. It's not surprising to see Animal Crossing: New Horizons slip after the huge arrival in March, especially when we know just how many people are buying the game digitally. Still, an impressive showing for Nintendo overall. Check out the full chart rundown below.
